First-install notes

  • Podman install: copy files and reload systemd If you use the provided Podman (Docker-like container tool) install, copy copyparty.container and copyparty.conf into /etc/containers/systemd and /etc/copyparty, then run sudo systemctl daemon-reload and sudo systemctl start copyparty; without those files or the reload, systemd (the Linux service manager) can't find the container. It should start at boot by itself, so you don't need to manually en source
  • Gentoo: install from the guru repo On Gentoo, run emerge www-servers/copyparty::guru; the ::guru part tells it to look in an extra package list, and skipping that can make the install fail to find copyparty. source
  • FreeBSD: add thumbnail/transcoding extras On FreeBSD, install py311-sqlite3, py311-pillow, and ffmpeg with pkg; without ffmpeg, live video transcoding and some preview features won't work, while the other packages support thumbnails and metadata. source

Common questions

How do I configure settings for only one shared folder?

Use volume-specific volflags, which are the options listed in copyparty's --help-flags output, while general options belong in the [global] section.

How should I set up user accounts?

Account configuration can be done in config files, or you can check the copyparty sfx helper with --help-accounts for the exact account options.

Why won't the provided Podman systemd service start?

Copy copyparty.container to /etc/containers/systemd and copyparty.conf to /etc/copyparty, run systemctl daemon-reload, then start the copyparty service. Without the files or reload, systemd cannot find the container.

What container security settings matter when running copyparty on TrueNAS?

Run copyparty in a container with a dedicated user and matching dataset permissions, and consider the security implications of how files are shared.
