OpenCloud
OpenCloud is a free, open-source platform for self-hosting personal cloud storage and collaboration on your own server.
Platform availability
Available on 4 of 9 platforms
Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes
- Install Docker first Run the official Docker install script so your machine has Docker, the tool that runs OpenCloud's containers. Without Docker, the container setup cannot start and the OpenCloud login page will not load. source
- Prepare the .env and compose file Copy .env.example to .env, then uncomment COMPOSE_FILE=docker-compose.yml:traefik/opencloud.yml to select the minimal OpenCloud setup. These files tell Docker Compose, the helper that starts the container stack, which settings and services to load; missing them can make the stack fail to start or run incorrectly. source
- Run the one-time init command Before starting the full server, run the init command with your config folder, data folder, and admin password (IDM_ADMIN_PASSWORD). It creates the required configuration, storage folders, and admin account; skipping it or losing those folders can leave OpenCloud without its settings or users. source
- Unraid first boot Create the OpenCloud config and data directories before first start and give the Unraid user 'nobody' read/write access to both. The container performs a one-time init on first boot to establish IDM_ADMIN_PASSWORD and then stops; remove 'init' from Post Arguments in the advanced view and restart it. source

Common questions
What must I run before starting the full OpenCloud server?
Run the one-time init command with your config folder, data folder, and IDM_ADMIN_PASSWORD. It creates the required configuration, storage folders, and admin account.
Does OpenCloud need an external database?
No, the backend does not use a database and stores all data in the filesystem. By default, its root directory is $HOME/.opencloud/.
How are OpenCloud users authenticated?
The backend authenticates users via OpenID Connect. It can use an external identity provider such as Keycloak or the embedded LibreGraph Connect identity provider.
What should I know about mounted folder permissions?
The host user with UID 1000 has full access to the mounted OpenCloud directories. Any local account with that UID can read, modify, or delete config and data files.
