Zabbix Server Pgsql is a containerized Zabbix server that uses PostgreSQL as its monitoring database. It polls and traps data, evaluates triggers, sends notifications, receives data from agents and proxies, and runs simple service checks. It suits homelabs and data centers needing enterprise-grade infrastructure monitoring with a PostgreSQL backend. Use it when you want a ready Zabbix server image without managing a separate database container.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Know where settings live Your main server settings are usually in /etc/zabbix/zabbix_server.conf, and web settings in /etc/apache2/conf-enabled/zabbix.conf; keep a copy because they store PostgreSQL connection details, and losing them can make Zabbix forget how to connect. source
  • Start Zabbix after install After installation, run the Linux service command systemctl start zabbix-server (and zabbix-agent if you installed it) so the server can start checking your hosts; if these services are stopped, the web interface can open but no monitoring data will appear. source
  • Don't leave Windows startup disabled If you install on Windows with an MSI package (a Windows installer file) and set STARTUPTYPE=disabled, the service will not start automatically; start it manually or set it to automatic, or Zabbix will sit idle until you remember. source

Common questions

What environment variables does the zabbix-server-pgsql container use to locate and authenticate to PostgreSQL?

Set DB_SERVER_HOST to the PostgreSQL server address. Set POSTGRES_USER and POSTGRES_PASSWORD for database authentication.

What happens during container startup when the PostgreSQL dbversion table is missing?

The image creates the Zabbix server database schema if the dbversion table is not present. It also uploads the initial data sample.

Why might a Zabbix agent UserParameter using pg_isready connect to PostgreSQL with the running user or wrong database?

This can happen when pg_isready does not explicitly specify the PostgreSQL user and database. It then defaults to the running user and database context.

Can newly installed Zabbix agents self-register on the Zabbix server and receive the correct template?

Yes, newly installed agents can self-register on the Zabbix server. The server can apply the correct template based on a discovery rule.

When are the official Zabbix server Docker images updated?

The images are updated when new Zabbix releases are published.
